The Court Referral Program is an alternative
sentencing option for the Superior Court and the Adult and Juvenile
Probation Department. The court has the option to assign community
service hours in addition to, or in lieu of, incarceration and or a
fine.
The Court Referral program provides placement,
follow-up, monitoring and reports on offenders referred to complete
community service work. A program fee is charged for each referral and
the fee is based on the number of hours of work assigned. Work
assignments are made on the basis of personal interviews to determine
the client’s skills, availability and limitations. Clients are matched
to a community agency to do a wide variety of tasks. This program is
mutually beneficial in that the work assignments provide the offender
the opportunity to work in the community in a positive and constructive
manner in which the offender and the community both benefit.
Many agencies throughout Fresno County utilize the
program to assist staff and solve many daily operational functions.
Volunteer positions for the Court Referral Program range from janitorial
duties to professional services rendered by court ordered volunteers.
Annually, more than 143,000 hours of manpower are provided to local
nonprofits and community organizations through this program.
